You may not believe your children listen, but they do. Studies show that children who have strong, open relationships with their parents are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. “Talk. They Hear You” provides resources and empowers adults to be proactive in preventing substance use through communication. Initiation of early conversations with youth can help direct them toward healthier choices and protect them from the dangers of substance use.
With the rise in underage substance use along with the legalization of marijuana and current opioid crisis, it’s crucial to assist our youth towards a healthy lifestyle and away from the dangers of alcohol and drugs. In the United States the 3rd leading cause of death is attributed to alcohol, and 2.1 million individuals ages 12 or older have an opioid use disorder. Such alarming numbers motivated the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to take action. Through the Sober Truth on Underage Drinking Act, the “Talk. They Hear You”campaign was built to address the ongoing issue of underage drinking and substance use among our country’s youth.
Launched in 2019, this campaign encourages adults to communicate with their children starting at an early age, around 9 to 13 years old, prior to exposure to peer pressure or beginning to experiment with substances. “Talk. They Hear You” provides useful resources and tools for parents and caregivers, including conversation starters, tips on how to approach sensitive topics, and guidance on how to create an environment where children feel comfortable sharing their concerns and experiences.
This National Media campaign places a spotlight on the impact of parents’ influence in their children’s lives, enforcing the idea that talking early can make a difference in pushing kids to make informed decisions about substance use. Strong communication between children and their parents or caregivers has been proven to decrease engagement in risky behaviors, such as underage use of drugs or alcohol.
In addition to the educational materials for parents, the campaign also provides public service announcements and digital media resources such as a podcast. Such resources aim to dissolve stigma around beginning conversations surrounding substance use and serve as a thoughtful reminder to adults of their ability to make a positive impact on their children’s health and well-being.
As a parent or caregiver, it’s crucial to address difficult topics, such as substance use, with your children. By fostering open and honest communication, you can become a positive influence on your child’s future decisions. “Talk. They Hear You” is an empowering and valuable resource that helps you take a proactive approach to substance abuse prevention.
